Document Destruction: FAQs

|
Why is timely shredding of my data so important? Karen Preston, Director of Sales, answers your questions:
Answer: The longer sensitive information is retained the more opportunity there is for inadvertent, as well as intentional, exposure or compromise of that information.
![]() How do shredding receptacles really work?
Answer: Shredding receptacles are designed for the convenient, short-term secure holding of sensitive information prior to destruction. They are placed in specified locations within a client’s facility and the information placed in them is removed by a Fireproof employee on a pre-determined schedule and immediately shredded and recycled.
How do I know what to shred and what to store?
Answer: Any records that are no longer required to be kept based on legal or internal retention policies should be destroyed in a timely manner. This includes all documents containing sensitive/proprietary information that are no longer needed.
Do you do mobile shredding?
Answer: Yes, Fireproof’s mobile shred service, “Shred-Smart”, offers fast, efficient, secure destruction at our clients’ offices. Our mobile shred service is not just for paper destruction. We can destroy 5-7” thick binders, softbound books, 3-ring binders, video cassettes, data cartridges, video, e-cartridges, file folders and general office materials.
Can you come and pick up information to be shredded?
Answer: Yes, Fireproof can securely transport your records and other materials to our secure shredding facility. Once your records arrive at our high-security facility they are destroyed using premium, industrial-grade shredders that render the information unreadable. All shredded materials are baled and shipped directly to a recycling plant to be turned into pulp.
How can I be sure my information is kept secure and confidential until it is destroyed?
Answer: As a safeguard, shredding receptacles/cabinets are never unlocked until we are ready to destroy the contents. Prior to the destruction process, all items to be destroyed (boxes of records, contents of receptacles/cabinets) are kept in a locked, secure area that is monitored by a security system 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.
Fireproof’s employees undergo mandatory background checks / drug screenings and are bonded and insured. In addition, all employees sign a Confidentiality Agreement with Fireproof that has penalties up to $10,000 that can be assessed for any type of security breach.
